Letter to the Editor – Candidate Mike Holden

Dear editor:

Tuesday, June 7, is Primary Election Day for Iowa.  Please get out and vote.  It’s a right and privilege given to us by our forefathers.  Primary, mid-term, or general, all elections matter!

I am running for the County Supervisor seat for District 3.  While I am running unopposed in the primary, I would still greatly appreciate your vote on the 7th and then again in November!

Why am I running for supervisor? First of all, I want to make sure we do everything we can to retain and to sustain our local businesses and manufacturers. A big part of economic development is making sure we don’t lose what we have. I also want Greene County to aggressively explore and pursue potential projects that can grow our tax base and increase tax revenues. These projects will not only increase revenues, but they also represent new opportunities to grow our local economy and communities. Growing our county and communities, in effect, helps keep our taxes lower by spreading our costs over a larger base. So, we need to define our vision for Greene County’s future and then do everything possible to make it happen. One way to help do this is to have a strategic long-term plan and to implement the strategies outlined in it.

I believe the next Greene County Board of Supervisors needs a culture change in how we allocate the use of our tax dollars. While everything is an outlay of money, we need to classify our uses as either tax dollar expenditures or as tax dollar investments. The difference between the two is that tax dollar investments have the potential, either directly or indirectly, to bring in a property tax revenue stream to the county. Tax dollar expenditures are just that……an expense.

Over the past 8-10 years, Greene County has made strides to grow our county’s economy and amenities. I think there is more we can do. I believe I can help Greene County find more opportunities to complement what we have already put in place.

I hope you will join me and support my vision for what Greene County could become. Let’s get growing!!

Mike Holden
